This is my first time posting here - but I've been reading for awhile and
it's extremely helpful.
Anyway, I'm planning on doing a thru-hike in 2009, and I have a question
about maps.

>From what I've read, here and elsewhere, a lot of people feel its
unnecessary to have maps for the whole length of the trail, but most agree
that maps are very helpful for traversing the Sierras, because of the snow,
etc.  So my question is this: if I carry a map of the John Muir trail (and
also I plan on carrying my GPS...I know it's extra weight, but it eases my
mind a bit), would that be sufficient?  I also have the Data Book and the
Town Guide.  I'd appreciate your thoughts on this.  Thanks. Nick
