I carried a Canon Powershot S5.

The Good:
It takes great photos in good light.
It can be used in manual mode, auto mode, and any mode in between.
It takes standard AA batteries.
It has a viewfinder, so you don't have to use up the batteries using the
the LCD monitor with every shot, and you can see what you are shooting
even when the sun would otherwise wash out the LCD monitor.
The LCD monitor swings out and pivots, so you can take pictures of
yourself and see how the picture is framed, or get a closeup of a flower
without getting down on the ground yourself.
It will take a lens

The Bad:
At 1 lb 5 oz (with batteries, without a case) it is a heavy camera for a
through hike.
It takes 4 batteries, so if you carry spares, that is still more weight.
The lens cap likes to fall off.
In low light situations I have trouble taking good photos with it.
