Last year I hiked in from the East side over New Army Pass, spent 3 days
getting to Guitar Lake and then hit Whitney and out to the Portal. There
was no problem getting the permit for the trail head; however, it is a
separate permit to exit at Whitney Portal. I could have doubled-back on the
trail head permit, no problem. But to exit at Whitney Portal required the
special $15.00 permit (got it as a walk-up).

If you come in from Crabtree, hike to Whitney and double back, you don't
need the extra $15.00 permit. Yes, the peak is in the Whitney zone but the
need for the exit permit is only if you go down trail crest to Whitney
Portal.

Now, being in the Whitney zone means you are supposed to use a "WAG bag,"
and that rule does apply. Note, that it is preferred by management, but not
required, to be used at Guitar. You will find a big plastic bin
conveniently located at a trail junction sometime after Crabtree with WAG
bags. For the uninitiated, a WAG bag is a
poop-in-a-bag-and-take-it-with-you thing.

Question so I leave Crabtree for Whitney.  Is there some place that tells me
the route by which I do not need a permit?  Then I return via what way?  The
way I came back to Crabtree mile 766.3 and continue from there?  Is this a
day trip from this point(mile 766.3 crabtree)  Or will it take longer?
