I couldn't agree more about the importance of bringing a camera.  If you
hike from Mexico to Canada without a camera, you'll end up kicking yourself
in the butt all the way back down Campo.
My base weight was 8 to 10 pounds.  I carried my camera on my hip.  Best
decision ever!  If you burry your camera in your pack you won't take as many
pictures.  Keep that thing accessible!
