A few years ago I did some tests with a few stove designs. I tested the
boil time of a Pika stove, and Atlanta stove and one of my own design.
The Atlanta stove boiled water extremely fast. I was impressed, until I
found out why it burned so hot. The Atlanta stove (a side burner that
uses the pot to seal the fuel cup) set the board it was sitting on on
fire. The Atlanta stove burns too close to the ground to be safe IMNSHO.

Likewise, I have had a cat stove leak fuel and leave a large black ring
behind, burning the surface it was sitting on.

An alcohol stove needs to be treated like an open flame and only be used
in an area that is cleared of combustibles.

For safety reasons, I would not take a side burning alcohol stove out on
the trail.
