It is about 570 miles from the border to Hwy 58. I've hiked in most areas
of it during the winter months. Rain is common in the winter in So Calif,
but snow is rare and short-lived below 7000'. The high country around San
Jacinto and Wrightwood/Baden-Powell requires specialized gear and skills,
but everything else is likely to be somewhere on the spectrum between ok and
gloriously nice. But be prepared and watch the weather because there are
occasional storms with heavy rain and sometimes snow down to 4000'.
