I have done a lot of backpacking Olympic park with no bear problems.
Washington and Oregon bears are less assertive than Calif bears. (They lack
the multigenerational "training" about people and food.) I do hang food -
mostly to guard against chipmunks. Since hiking the Sierra PCT, I have
started using the balance method just to be safe. A single 30' 1/8" cord is
sufficient, but I carry a second as a backup. 6' of ground clearance hanging
a few feet below a branch is enough.
