Many bears know what these canisters look like and they will test them to make sure the lids are on tight.  Place your bear can in a slight depression.  This way if a bear "plays" with it, the can will roll back down to the bottom of the depression.  Avoid leaving it near a  slope where it can be knocked down and and roll away.  Likewise, don't leave it near running water where it can be swept away down stream.  For that matter, avoid bodies of still water that it could be kicked or rolled into as well.  Keep it locked at all times, except in the moment that you are retrieving food .  There have been times when a hiker has turned his back with an open can and the bear has swept in and grabbed it just that fast.
