I was there in August . Many places as likely you ' ve heard . There is a brew pub which I liked a great deal and the Best Western as you enter town ( from the West ) is excellent - breakfast deck overlooking the Columbia . Brew Pub - can ' t remember name but is a city block East down the main drag from the B W but on the opposite side of the street . Probably by now you have gotten many helpful answers . Too , you can ask in the P O as this is , of course , one of the ' trail ' towns and he / they - have a register there and the man on duty when I was there was quite knowledgeable about the trial ( and of course the , town . ) Town ' grew' on me . I was there same day as Scott and Joe going forward on their historic hike . Swing by the Marina . Is a horse of a different color - grass and lovely grounds and facilities . I came via the Eagle Creek Trail after traversing Mt . Hood across the face with even then much snow - especially below Paradise Park .

Cool article on Aaron Nicholson, a Eugeneian who attempted to hike all of Oregon on one packful of food this summer...

Anyone know if he had a trailname?

A simple guess is to make a straighter trail line with a little less private
land easements, and the Rim trail avoids some prime timber producing lands
on the south side of the Hat Creek Valley. The usfs drilled some deep wells
on the HCRim, but produced no water. They intended to set up water tanks at
the HCRim Lookout, but the rim and lookout burned up in 1987. Today, the
hikers rely on the locals for water drops at Cache22 and Cache44, and with
no usfs budgets today, their intent to keep tanks full of water would have
been empty. They should have built it on the south side of Hat Creek Valley
from Burney Falls to Lassen. There are many differences between the 1935
route and the current one, check out these original maps. Clarke avoided the
Marbles and Trinity Alps, which is one section where the current route is
superior to his version. His route was about 2100 miles, vs the current 2650
one.  PCT history can be fun, and a great way to understand the trail's many
changes over the decades.

Wow, all that so near to the Hat Creek Rim? I thought the Rim was
interesting and enjoyed walking it. I think I would have enjoyed your
spot more.

In my opinion, the PCT makes a lot of poor route choices that keep
you too far away from water and pretty places.

If the trail originally went through the 1000 Lakes Wilderness, and
there are still trails there, why did they choose to route the PCT
through Hat Creek Rim instead?

Greetings and perambulations!  Next week, I'll be heading out to hike Oregon Section G.  My wife will be picking me up in Cascade Locks and I thought it might be neat and more navigationally convenient if we could rendezvous at a coffee place.  So I jumped online and lo and behold, I'm having a heck of a time even finding a restaurant listed in town!  There are a few of those as well as a couple of coffee places listed for Stevenson, WA, right across the Columbia, but nothin' in Cascade Locks.  I'm thinking, "Wait a minute.  There's a fr'deekin' airport in town and NO coffee places?  Yeah, right!"  I know yellow page listings aren't always complete and, like any other database, are subject to whatever information has been submitted.  Ergo, I'd like to pose this question to the list:
Are there any coffee places, cafes, restaurants, etc. in Cascade Locks that might be open on a Sunday evening?

I used a Sawyers inline filter on my section hike.? I had an MSR dromedary bag that I got a on/off valve and hooked it right into the filter.? My out hose was from my Katadyn and fit a Platypus or most disposable plastic water bottles.? I liked it because it was quick and easy.? I had potable water almost right away.

I've used Rainypass Repair in Seattle with great results.
http://rainypass.com/
~~^^~

I picked up a Lowe backpack that is old but in reasonable condition.  The
shoulder straps are in good shape but the foam inside has hardened and is
crumbling.  I contacted Lowe and they don't offer replacement items for
their "older packs".  Anyone have suggestions for repair/replacement
sources?

I'm in SF Bay Area, but could mail out.

Thanks,

PCT Class of 2008

Time is quickly approaching where work must begin towards creation of the 2008 PCT dvd. To date, this hiker is unaware of a 2008 thru hiker announcing he or she will edit the 2008 dvd. SO, THIS IS A CALL FOR A 2008 THRU HIKING EDITOR TO STEP FORWARD AND ACCEPT THIS PROJECT. This is a monumental task; one where you will need to devote an estimated 1000 hours of your personal time. Of course, the rewards will be an eternally grateful Class of 2008, and your satisfaction of working with all the hikers and trail angels assembling a lasting record of those who hiked the trail and trail conditions for the 2008 season.

If a thru hiker is willing to undertake this project, of if anyone knows of a hiker still on the trail wanting to create the dvd, please let myself and the lists know before October 15, 2008. This project must begin by that date in order to assemble the huge amount of data (hiker lists, photos, music) required for creation of the dvd.

If no one is willing to undertake this project, I will gladly accept the challenge.  It would be an privledge and an honor.

STEP UP!

Tom

Thanks, once again, Deems, for the great photos...  It brought back many memories...
When we moved from Yreka to Redding, Magee Peak and Magee Lake became one of my favorite
'quick' getaways - went in from Old Cow Creek trailhead many times...  A fantastic volcanic area...

> ...less private land easements, and the Rim trail avoids some prime timber producing lands...

I'm sure the timber interests and private land in the lower Hat Creek Valley came into play in
routing the PCT up onto the Rim...

> "...a tragic trail routing mistake that probably won't ever be corrected."

At least the USFS 'corrected' some of it - it was built and routed away from Old Station and up onto
the Rim much sooner years ago...  It went North from the western side of Badger Mtn. and then
turned NE, climbed a 300' escarpment to Little Bunchgrass Meadow and then along the NW base
of West Prospect Peak before climbing the 900' Hat Creek Rim escarpment due West of Baker Lake...
Most of that stretch in typical thru season is waterless - it would have been more than 50 waterless miles!
See <http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/forestvisitormaps/lassen/17.php> and look for the "PHARMS TRAIL"...
If you have National Geographic TOPO! California software, it is labeled "Pacific Crest National Scenic
Trail" in addition to the Pharms Trail label in that area...
(BTW, all the CA region USFS "Forest Visitor Maps" can be viewed online at
<http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/forestvisitormaps/>...  FYI / FWIW)

> PCT history can be fun, and a great way to understand the trail's many

Yes, indeed!  I have the two original Wilderness Press guides (along with a couple of later years and
the latest editions) plus the USFS 1973 "Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail (California Portion)" in my
PCT 'library'...
Very interesting to compare the 'planned' route (and some 'completed' portions) as to where it is today!
Another 'planned' portion that will probably never come about is in Deems' backyard - the bridge over the
Klamath River near Fort Goff (West of Seiad Valley)...  The six mile road walk from Grider Creek through Seiad Valley will be there for many generations, if not permanently...

> Clarke avoided the Marbles and Trinity Alps, which is one section where the current route is

I most definitely agree - but I am obviously biased since I grew up in that area and still consider it "home"...

Thanks for the memories, Deems!  Happy trails!!!

I'm curious.  In 1992 I started my first PCT section hike where the
Pharms trail crosses Road 32N12, heading south to Whitney.  My
girlfriend and I stayed at the little campground/bare spot at the twin
bridges crossing of Hat Creek and walked the half-mile to where the
trail crossed the road.  When did this get shifted?
