Have you tried Mojave Narrows Regional Park
http://www.sbcounty.gov/parks/mojave.htm as this is the main park with
trails in the area. I know it isn't huge but it is your best option as it
is centrally located. When the water levels are down, you can just hike
along the river bed as well.

When I lived up there in the early 80's as a kid, we use to drive out to
Bell Mountain and scramble to the top and back down. That was always a good
workout. I know the town has grown up since I left in 84, but you still
should be able to drive past the developement and just hike across the
desert as far as you want.

Otherwise, you need to head south through Hesperia to highway 173 where it
heads into the San Bernardino Mtns. There you pass Mohave River Forks
Regional Park and pass that you have the numerous trails of the National
Forest as you head toward either Silverwood Lake or Lake Arrowhead which
includes the PCT. All of this should be less then an hour drive.
