Any idea what dates these 3 hikes began and from where? Thanks,

Greetings,

In planning a hike for next summer I am looking for input on hiking into
the PCT from the west side at the end of Highway 180 via either the
Bubbs Creek or Woods Creek trails in Kings Canyon N.P.

Bubbs Creek Trail is more direct and comes out at the Kearsarge
Pinnacles.

Woods Creek Trail comes out in the Rae Lakes Basin. This route includes
an additional pass, Glen Pass.

We would then hike over Forrester, to Crabtree, dayhike Whitney, and
return via Junction Meadow, Colby Pass, Roaring River Ranger Station,
and Avalanche Pass to the car.

Thoughts on the conditions of these trails and passes and is Rae Lakes
worth a visit is helpful.

I haven't figured up mileage, but planning on a week of 15 mile days.

Regards,

I voted last week, again on Friday, also on Monday and then finally on
Tuesday.

As someone famous once said, "Vote often and hard".

Like Pink Gumby, I vote in person, in real time, in real life, like I
walk the trail.? I don't mail that in either.? No offense to those of
you who do.? I just enjoy the ritual of the thing, talking to others in
line and to the workers at the poll, etc.? :) ?
I hope we get a decent Secretary of the Interior this time.? Save a
tree, vote!

Meadow Ed here.............
First of all i want to thank Brick for his post a few days ago about
reminding us all to vote. I sort of am amazed to see no one but me wrote
a follow up post to this note to remind us all to vote yesterday. Then i
was also happy to see a good response to my own "vote" post. Scott, if
your reading this maby its one of the topics you should post a few days
prior to elections. No one i saw posted HOW to vote so that was a plus
for us all here.
Yes maby a new Sec. of the Interior would be a nice benefit for those
of us who love our wilderness.

Hey Mags,
?
I got you beat on dirt cheap, can get a wide brim sombrero here in Peru
for $2.30, which is what I have used for years, including for the PCT.
The only problem is that they are cotton, so soak up rather than shed
water. I used a plastic rain cover for cowboy hats, got it at
horselovers(z?).com.
?
I agree on Tilleys being too heavy, an English chap left one with me but
haven't used it. Not my style either (as anti dirtbag can?you get).

Just got the Granite Gear Vapor Alpine (mtn. climber version of the
Vapor Trail) for $56.32 at Amazon (short and long torso only) and a pair
of Komperdell Carbon Fiber trekking poles at backcountrygear.com for
$89. Somehow a new Montbell UL down jacket ended up in my shopping
basket too!

I have been looking around on the WEB for an extra large GoLite Wisp
Windshirt but all I can find?are smaller sizes in Clarence sales.? I am
guessing that GoLite is replacing this windshirt but don't see anything
listed as its replacement.? Does anyone know anything about this or a
comparable alternative?

Tilleys Too heavy?

Something is weird here. My Tilley's LMT6 Airflow hat that I bought
last
year only weights 3.5oz (99g). By contrast, my offical PCT baseball cap

bought from the PCTA last year weights 3.4oz(96g). Now my lighterweight

UCLA baseball cap does only weigh 2.6oz(72.5g). But that isn't a huge
difference that my head is going to notice. You add that sahara tent
thing
to the back of any baseball cap and the weight goes up about an ounce
since
that is what most bandannas weigh which puts it at or above my Tilleys
hat
weight. So I don't get the too heavy comment.

Perhaps some of you have seen some of Tilley's other hats rather then
the
nylon material models. They make them out of different materials such
as
cotton or hemp. As an example, my Tilley's TH6 hat made out of hemp
weights
a staggering 6.2oz (147g). Now I could understand that being considered

heavy. Tilley also make smaller hats. Their LTM5 airflow hat which has
a
slightly smaller brim is also popular for hiking and should weight
around
3oz.

Then again, it could also just be a perception due to its size?

One correction, my Tilley's TH6 Hemp had should have said 5.2oz(147g)
and not 6.2oz. And due to the mocha color + the material appearance, my
friend refer to it as the Jed Clampett hat. I figure that if and when I
do the AT, it will be the perfect hat for the Southern portion.

The route up Bubbs Creek is scenic with nice campsites, although the
climb
up to Vidette Mdws would feel steep the first day. Both Woods and Bubbs

have lots of bear activity; do not walk away from your pack! Although
Woods
seemed more trampled to me, Rae Lakes is stunning. Glen Pass was harder

than Forester, I thought, but had a neat ridgeline with awesome views.
Sounds like a great hike!
