[pct-l] Crossing the Border going Southbound

I am planning a Southbound hike on the PCT and wondering about crossing the border coming into the US from Canada. I have heard that it is illegal to cross over from the trail, but is it still possible to do? Do they have guards at the border or can you just walk on over? Is there an alternate route that isn't illegal?  Any suggestions, information, or tips would be awesome!
