[pct-l] Glacial streams...

Going over Yogi's Guidebook again and noticed several references to "silty glacial" streams in Oregon and admonishments against filtering from such sources, to avoid clogging one's filter.  Does anyone know if a significant degree of settling will occur, enough to make the water safe for filtering (OK, that sounds weird!), if one collects and allows a container to stand for a few hours or overnight before filtering?
