FWIW, it is my understanding that Giardia is not spread by cows, or
any other herbivores (like horses.) I remember reading that the horse
people's vets spent quite a bit of time looking into this and decided
it wasn't an issue.

Personally, I haven't filtered or treated Mountain water since about
half way through the Sierra during my PCT hike in 95.
