A steripen should kill the nasties in the water, but will do nothing for the color texture and taste. This is not a big deal in most areas, but can be in some drier areas. Prefiltering through a bandana or coffee filter helps, but only a real filter will clean up the nasty pond scum, assuming the scum doesn't plug the filter. AsABat
