You can't go wrong with any of the suggestions in the Sierras or on the Tahoe Rim Trail. BUT don't forget about the PCT in your back yard. In section B, C, and D if you avoid the desert sections. You easily can get mid summer, above tree line - excellent hikes that fit your request of 30-40 miles. And as a bonus lLESS wear and tear on your car, fuel cost and shuttling difficulties that you will have in the less populated areas of California. I have hiked these sections often - when I hike midweek and non-thru season I have had a marvelous wilderness experience..

Section B ------- Start South of Idlewild and junction with the PCT either at Palms to Pines highway or North at several trail junctions and stop at Black Mountain Camp.

Section C - Start at Onxz summit where the PCT almost junctions with 38 or Near the Big Bear dump where the PCT junctions with 18. End at Splinters Cabin near Lake Arrowhead. This I would recommend the least considering last falls and the 03 fires. There are some reroute and a lot of charred trails.

Section D - Start near Wrightwood either at the Acorn trail or Inspiration Point/Vincent Gulch where the trail intersects with Rt 2. Hike to Islip Saddle - where you can access Route 2 from La Cananda or a where the trail intersects Route 2 - S and W of there numerous times.

Last year I joined my son, a PCT thru-hiker, for three days along the
trail. Chance timing caused those three days to be Kennedy Meadows to
Trail Pass. An beautiful section and highly recommended. The
detailed description starts here http://pct2007.org/2007/06/06/2006-06-06-happy-fathers-day/

The only problem with this section is getting back to your car. I am
comfortable doing this by hitching, as I did again this year when I
hiked Trail Pass to Kearsarge Pass by myself. That's a little longer,
and involves higher and more spectacular scenery. Maybe for your
second trip. I see someone else is suggesting a loop from Horseshoe
Meadows, which would solve the trailhead access problem by starting
and finishing at the same point.

My son 'SunWalker' is now 27 and more of a hiking veteran than me
(PCT2007, Japan-cape-to-cape 2008), but I got him started as an 18yr
old in Yosemite nine years ago.)
