In '04-'06 I walked solo all night through B, D and F (good cougar country). Yes, a couple of times I was paranoid when walking through "forest," and laying "exposed" in my bivy sack. I used two poles so I would be less likely to stumble. I will do it again when I get in good enough shape. I loved hiking at night. There are quite a few sections of the initial 90 miles SOBO to Stehekin that I wouldn't do a night because of the beauty. It deserves daytime.
Snakes are cold blooded and shouldn't be out at night. Use a bear canister, not mace, but even tho I saw tons of scat in the first 20 miles when I went SOBO I didn't worry about bears.

I am starting my southbound solo thru of the PCT around July 5th... I have a
question about animal attacks...
Am I significantly more likely to be stalked/attacked when hiking solo? Am
I really going to be actively hunted by coyotes in the desert night (I plan
on walking mostly at night in the desert)? Do animals out there really see
me as a meal? Or are my survivalist family members just being overly
paranoid?
