Castle Crags State Park is 3 miles south of Dunsmuir and there is a connector trail from the PCT directly to the PCT Hikers' (primitive) campsite (#35).

Primitive sites are $9; developed sites $20

Good bathrooms and coin-op showers. I stayed there one night on my hike.

Last year I spent a few nights at the motel6 in Weed, it was ~$45/night and
  short bus ride north.
