Sure, you can download them for free. And then it costs to print them.  
And then you have to trace the trail on them. and then there's 5000 of  
them. :P I found that except for the sierras, I never used a map. And  
in special circumstances, the guidebook maps are good enough.

But if you simply MUST have additional maps, the USGS ones aren't bad.  
there're projects out there by certain people to trace the trail on  
them already, too.
