Good morning, All,
The latest California Snow Water Content website http://cdec.water.ca.gov/cgi-progs/products/PLOT_SWC.2009.pdf shows three charts: Northern Section, Central Section, and Southern Section, but because of formatting changes they no longer identify what parts of the mountains those charts cover.
For reference:
Northern Section = Trinity River through Feather & Truckee Rivers
Central Section = Yuba & Tahoe Rivers through Merced & Walker Rivers
Southern Section = San Joaquin & Mono Rivers through Kern & Owens rivers.
Websites are available from years 2000 through 2009, and can be found at the menu website: http://cdec.water.ca.gov/cgi-progs/lsproducts That is a really messy menu so probably the easiest way to go to a different chart is to just change the year in the "PLOT_SWC.2009" portion of the URL and go directly.
Water managers think in terms of stream flow, so they are interested in the water potential from major drainages, for example, water from all of the mountains drained by the San Joaquin & Mono Rivers through Kern & Owens Rivers. That can be a bit difficult to visualize in reference to the PCT but it might make an interesting winter-evening project to puzzle out the divides between these drainages on a large map.
