It's not the quantity. Whether it's 3 feet or 15 feet, it will cover the 
trail. This leads to navigation issues, the energy/desire to walk on it and 
the gear you carry (ice axe or crampons). This assumes packed spring time 
conditions on pitched terrain.

This is not a flat driveway. :)

Winter is something else entirely.
