Hi Gary -

The best initial training for me has been just getting out and 
hiking, probably with the equipment you have stored away since 
you were 25, and try the backpacking thing at your current point 
in life.  So try some day and/or multi-day hikes, and see whether 
you like it, and what equipment really would enhance your hikes.  

Also, has your wife been running?  Couples can do great together, 
but they need to be on close to "the same page" athletically.
