The rules state that you must carry a canister. However, it is still a 
choice. You must accept the responsibility and consequences of your choices.

If you're going to leave your food in your pack outside your tent and then 
stand there taking photos while a bear has it's way with your pack, please 
do all parties involved a huge favor, carry a canister.

Bears will never go a full generation without access to human food. The 
folks that dreamed up this absurd concept are the spawn of the mental giants 
who opened the dumps to bears for the entertainment of tourists.

Quoting what Steel-Eye said, because the natural order needs to be 
understood by the coffee house hikers:

"...the problem is not what the sow teaches them, it's what the sow doesn't 
teach them  - fear of humans. With rare exceptions, where humans hunt bears, 
bears avoid humans.  In some areas - National Parks in particular - that 
balance has been tipped when bear populations are deprived of that 
life-saving fear."

That is the core of the problem and solution.
