SPOT has meant a lot to my family who can receive a message each night I camp.  It has not failed me yet and I have used it on several trips where cell service was virtually impossible.  It lets them know I am OK and my location.  I have not used the search and rescue or infamous help button yet and so can't vouch for the reliability of that.  But, for my purposes, it encourages my family's acceptance of my crazy lust for hiking---many times solo.  The price has certainly been worth it for me and 100% reliable, in that respect.  But, it is another thing to carry---and we all have to make our choices there.  Some may consider it a toy who do not need to reassure 'la famille'---but for me it makes sense.  HYOH and CYOG!
