My brother Steve (a.k.a. Stilts) has been using the SPOT device to send signals to me daily.  He's keeping a journal on postholer.com.  PCT MOM, he will be stopping at your place, so you are welcome to follow his progress to see when he will be arriving.  He just entered WA yesterday and he typically covers 25-30 miles per day.
 
I love the SPOT device b/c it gives me peace of mind and it is also really fun to see where Steve is on a daily basis.  He usually sends a signal from his campsite and his lunch site.  He bitches somewhat about the extra weight, but I think when he's done with his hike he'll appreciate having the device.  He'll enjoy looking at a satellite map of his camp spots.
 
The signal sometimes does not transmit, that it true.  Overall though, I think it's a great little device.
