My number one recommendation for 'how to get good pictures'
is to absolutely, positively, without-a-doubt, make sure
that you can grab your camera and take a picture without
stopping to take your pack off and preferably while still
walking. It doesn't really matter how great your photo
equipment or skills are if you don't have access to your camera.

If you think you can hike with an SLR strapped to you,
go for it.  More likely you'll want a camera that can
sit in a hip or shoulder pouch and can be grabbed quickly
with one hand.
