No, it's not.

Unfortunately, it happens more often than it should, and Bill Bryson kind of popularized it with his book A Walk In The Woods where he describes how he gleefully flung all kinds of junk off a cliff on the AT.  Actually, I think that first AT section from Springer is legendary for all kinds of crap that's discarded along it.
