Hi Bill,
Your friend was eating the berries of Rhamnus californica. It is also known as coffeeberry or buckthorn. It grows throughout the mountains of California from south to north. Someone once thought of it as a potential substitute for coffee, but the flavor didn't cut it. The bark was collected widely by American Indians to be made into a laxative. It probably shouldn't be eaten therefore in large quantities. Especially on a backpacking trip. Eeew.
