Sly,

I understand the Jonathan Ley alternative is beautiful. I also understand that it is not for the faint of heart. To access this alternative one still is required to take the initial leg of the official Indian Pass to Miner's Creek detour. You will still include the beautiful and difficult climb up Boulder Pass and the descent into the Napequa River drainage before heading west to reach Ley's alternative.

In 2006 I went through here just prior to Labor Day and decided to take the official detour. I met several folks that were finishing off a final section of their 2005 thru-hike and they decided to go over Ley's route. When they finally arrived in Stehekin they indicated that while it was incredibly beautiful, the scramble was difficult and the trail was sometimes very difficult to follow.

Some day I would definitely like to return to this area and do a loop hike including the pre-2003 PCT route over the west side of Glacier as well as the Ley alternative. It would be fantastic!

Re: the official detour, the climb from the Napequa over Lil Giant was in my opinion, the most challenging 2-3 miles on the entire PCT. Beautiful views but it was definitely a goat trail up to the pass.

Jeff
