[pct-l] ATMs and Banks

My bank's ATM card is a Visa "check card". I can use it as an ATM or
credit card. Many places have fees for either ATM use, or credit card
use, or sometimes both (!). Many grocery stores will allow you to buy an
item and receive cash back, usually without a charge.

I haven't weighed my check card ;), but I also carry a large
denomination bill as a back-up. Between the two, it takes up little room
and weighs next to nothing.

Don't know if a UK bank would be an issue when using their cards, but
MAYBE it's a good idea to open an account with a major west coast bank,
and deposit as much as you anticipate using?

I wouldn't take travelers checks. Or if I did, I would cash them at
banks or larger markets along the way. Many smaller places won't take
travelers checks if for no other reason than the cashier doesn't know
what to do with them.

It's funny what those travel books will say about a place. I once
decided to read the Lonely Planet guide for the US. I was suddenly
stricken with terror at all the pick-pocketing and mugging I was in
for! I've lived here all my life and have never seen a pick-pocket.
Con-men are much more common (anybody who needs a few bucks to get
gas for their car is lying). People here are generally good and honest.
