I wouldn't take travelers checks. Or if I did, I would cash them at
banks or larger markets along the way. Many smaller places won't take
travelers checks if for no other reason than the cashier doesn't know
what to do with them.
It's funny what those travel books will say about a place. I once
decided to read the Lonely Planet guide for the US. I was suddenly
stricken with terror at all the pick-pocketing and mugging I was in
for! I've lived here all my life and have never seen a pick-pocket.
Con-men are much more common (anybody who needs a few bucks to get
gas for their car is lying). People here are generally good and honest.
