Monty,
I bought my girlfriend Canon Powershot s3 IS last year. It uses AA has a nice zoom with image stabilization...... can be used by the prosumer or a novice. It is a little heavy/bulky ------- but you will not find a camera with that big of a zoom w/o losing on the weight factor. As a photographer I think it is well worth it.

I bought my father a Nikon Coolpix S10 last year too. This IMO is the smallest/lightest camera with the longest zoom. It is designed strangely and does not look/act like a traditional camera. It does take proprietary batteries and does not have as good of glass as the Canon s3. The newer proprietary batteries do last a long time. My Canon g6 lasted from Kennedy Meadows to Pooh corner on two batteries in 06.

  Hope this helps.

As for uploading on the trail, I have never done that I just take tons of memory cards since they are so cheap. I'd think that your cell phone idea would be cumbersome, time consuming, and battery prohibitive.

          Hey Shutterbug

I have a question you may be the most qualified to answer.
  I would like your recommendations.

Dropped my 3mp/3X optical AA battery camera
This works but i would like more zoom.
  Not worth fixing.

  I need a camera for this thru-hike.
I haven't really carried one before.

The MP's aren't as important as the optical zoom.
I'm using the photos on a journal.

  I don't mind carrying a light charger.
Solar charger seems too complicated with all the hookups beyond my time and knowledge restraints.
I might buy a couple of propriatory batteries it that would help.

  Titanium AA's good too.

Need to download along the trail.
  I have no trail support/transcriber.

Downloading to, and sending from my cell????
I think a cell phone with a huge memory card and a 10x optical zoom would be right for taking and sending photos. :0)

What options do you know about?

  I heard you moved??
If true, are you still near the trail??
