For me it's about being polite and courteous. If someone writes me a
private message, to me it's just common sense and common courtesy to
respond with a private message. If I believe the entire group could
benefit by what they have written, then I would tell them that in a
private message and suggest that they post it publicly. Personally, I'd
never take that step without at least asking them first. And personal
information (such as address or phone number) that you send someone
privately--by all means that should remain private!
