I wonder if this is the same nut I ran into coming off of Whitney in
2001. My son and I hiked from Trail Pass to hike to Whitney. Our permit
was for 6 days, planning a leisurely hike, but after starting up the
trail we decided to speed things up as he wanted to get home early. On
day three, after summiting Whitney, a ranger asked for our permit at
Trail Camp and we were quickly on our way, or so we thought. A second
ranger at Outpost Camp asked for our permit. She stared at it for a
while, then asked us to wait as she was busy on the radio with something
else. We waited 10 or 15 minutes (why I don't know). Then she asked "How
was Trail Pass?" I answered politely, figuring she wanted some beta.
Then she asked where we camped that night, the next night, and so on.
She then looked at my pack (about half the size of her day pack) and
asked about my gear, including a bear can. I thought several times about
asking if I could go, but kept thinking she was almost done, and wanted
to be polite. Finally she decided I "probably" did start my hike from
Trail Pass and wasn't just faking it because I couldn't get a day hike
permit. After all this (half an hour later) she brought another ranger
over and went through the whole routine again before letting us go. By
now it was dark, we were hungry, and we knew the Portal Store would be
closed and we wouldn't be eating burgers for dinner, so we ended up
spending another night on her precious trail. I thought several times
about asking if I could go, but kept thinking she was almost done, and
wanted to be polite.
