My husband Scout and I and our wonderful Gossamer Gear G-5's finished our
thru-hike a month ago. The G-5's are very lightweight at 8 oz, but they are
made of silnylon and have to be babied a bit. I'll trade a little extra
care of my pack for the savings in weight anyday.
We also bought the sturdier G-4's in case we needed them for carrying ice
axes or crampons in the Sierras or if our G-5's were damaged. We didn't use
them, but loaned them to two of our children who hiked sections with us.
They also performed well.
I like the design of the G-4/G-5, especially the pockets, which seem to be
lacking on many of the lightweight packs.
There were a couple of times when we had to carry more food and water than
usual and Scout's pack was a bit overloaded. So pay attention to the weight
guidelines - I would say don't use these packs to carry more than 25 lbs,
except in a pinch. Also, they don't work so well when you want to slackpack
and use it like a day pack - it needs some bulk to ride properly.
And Shutterbug's right, Gossamer Gear is all about great customer service.
