[pct-l] Tahoe Trailfest

I just phoned Don Fyfe in Tahoe City and found out that he was away at a meeting -- a meeting to talk about this year's Tahoe City Trail Days!

In the past, he's arranged for dealers to show up, repair gear, etc., and has even convinced the city to provide free camping and showers in the campsite in the center of town. They don't have a date yet, but I did get a confirmation that it's on again this year. I'll post more info when I have it.

My very biased opinion is that the North Shore is a way more laid back place to hang out (I find the casino scene pretty gaudy). There aren't any AYCE buffets there, but I do remember a weekday AYCE at a sushi restaurant a few years back (maybe that was winter only, and given that the sushi was high quality, I'd feel pretty guilty going in there with a thru-hiker appetite and plunking down $18 to eat about $100 worth of food -- the casinos, however, build the AYCE concept into their business plan, and sell a much cheaper-to-produce and less labor-intensive fare).

I'll be up there this summer on and off and will be able to offer folks rides into town and back to the trail. I'll post more on pct-l, or on a website as the time draws near. I may be able to offer showers/laundry as well. I know for sure I'll be there mid-July, as a fellow 2002 thru-hiker just talked me into joining him on the 2007 Tour of the California Alps (much more commonly known as the Markleeville "Death Ride"). Each summer, I make a trip up to Barker Pass, and never fail to find a thru-hiker. Last year, one guy wearing a "Saufley Electric" shirt was puzzled as to how I knew he was a thru-hiker (as if the smooth gait and smaller pack didn't already give him away). I've also caught up with Meadow Mary up there on several occasions, (only to find out I've missed BillyGoat by a matter of hours).
