Go for the ski poles. If you don't find them useful, you have not spent gobs of money on glorified ski poles. :)

FWIW, I've hiked various trails with ski poles. At this point, I can't see what I'd gain from buying a pair of poles for $75+ when the $10 ones worked so well.
