[pct-l] Rides Needed

We had a blast starting from Warner Springs and hiking south into the kick-off last year. The biggest benefit was meeting so many thru-hikers along the way. Then you meet up with them as you start again after the kick-off at Warner Springs. And you can hike from the border to lake morena as a day hike during the kick-off weekend. And it didn't hurt hiking with Squash and Splash where we probably laughed more than hiked.
We went slow mileage and I believe thats what helped me transition into a much less painful beginning than when I had started in Mexico the previous year ("05")) - and needed to begin with big mileage (for me) our first day out. I was plagued with foot problems from then out and actually needed to drop out 350 miles later... I pushed to hard, and for what reason. there was deep snow that year in all higher elevations and I should have just meandered along and let it melt while my body adjusted to the hikers way.
I think I also trained to hard for the "05" thru-hike because my feet had problems even before I began. there might be something said for showing up for the hike with moderate pre-training. Anyone else out there experience what I did? (I am 50 so this might just apply to that age group and not those with younger bodies that can be punished without regret.)
