this or other factors create a need for Gaiters on the PCT?"".
I do not regularly use gaiters in the summer, but my hiking buddy Pete used
gaiters every single mile he did, in all the desert sections and thru the
dry trails of the Sierras. His gaiters for this are about 4 inches high and
they keep the send out of hi socks and shoes. I on the other hand stopped
now and then to pull out pickies. As you will find out, here is a very picky
grass seed pod that sticks very tenaciously to your socks through parts of
sections A to D, can't remember exactly where. Since we always use low-cut
shoes and not hiking boots, I think I'm going to star following his example
and use the short gaiters - saves a heck of a lot of sand from going into
your socks and feet bottoms and the short ones are not as much of a nuisance
to put on and are not so hot on the feet.
Hope REI or MEC can send me a couple pairs for my taking the time to write
this!
Tom
