Roy...yes!!! An emphatic yes!!!.  The volcanic ash and cinder in the (lower, at least) Cascades will be a killer down the back of whatever you're wearing on you feet W/O gaiters.  Trust me!!!
Speaking of which, I may be taking my home-made gaiters that go to the knee and I've never needed anything else, to Kick-Off, for the Gear contest.  And copies of the pattern too.
