[pct-l] Pants...

Good morning, Alden,

Over the years I've had good experience with a pair of REI nylon, zip-off
leg, cargo pants. I started the PCT with them mainly because I thought I
would need the legs for sun protection. As it turned out, I used the legs
only one day, relying instead on sun-block. The shorts weigh 7.5 oz., the
legs are 4.1 oz., and a pair of poly boxer-briefs weighs 2.0 oz.

At Kennedy Meadows I switched all that for a pair of thin nylon running
shorts with a built-in jock liner that weigh a total of 3.0 oz. That's what
I used from then on, and I was very satisfied. I didn't carry any spare
shorts or additional leg covering such as tights, wind pants or rain pants.
I didn't need the pockets because I wear a little 3.7 oz. belt-pack with my
camera, Chap Stick and other such little items. Running or hiking, I've
found that I'm comfortable with bare legs down to about 20 deg. F given
average wind speed, and bare legs dry much more quickly than pant legs after
a fording event.
