I bought some NB 810's this past spring 1/2 size above normal. I never tried using the inner soles that came with it and immediately threw in some green superfeet. I used a short and thin 2 layer Wrightsock with them. Both the shoes and socks held up well and were comfortable this past summer with almost 300miles of backpacking and look to have enough life in them to repeat again next year. I had no real blistering problems and no foot pain. I am anal about rotating my socks every hour though. That said, I don't know if I would use trail runners if I still weighted 50lbs. more like I did in 2005. I think the ankle support or a real boot is needed when your combined bodyweight+packweight is above a certain threshold.
