We hiked PCT and JMT between Reds Meadow and Rush Creek Crossing between
Aug. 7 and 16. Streams that are shown as intermittent (blue dashed
lines) on the Harrison map are dry. Shadow Creek is running well. The
river is low enough that it is easy to ford nearly anywhere. Most of
the springs are running well on the High Trail, a few are dry. Same
goes for springs on the hill between Mammoth Pass and Reds Meadow.
Outlets of Thousand Island and Garnet are barely flowing. Water in the
tarns at Island Pass is down about 18 inches from normal. Horseshoe
Lake is nearly empty, but the other Mammoth Lakes are at normal levels.
The good news is, no mosquitoes anywhere.
They are doing major road work on Lake Mary road, with a flagman, so you
can expect to be delayed on that road. They are using the horse trailer
parking area at Horseshoe Lake for storing piles of asphalt and dirt and
heavy equipment, so it is a bit of a challenge to park large rigs at
Horseshoe Lake at this time. But it can be managed.
