Cindy Ross chronicled her experience at this point on the PCT in her 
book, "Journey on the Crest: Walking 2600 miles from Mexico to Canada.  
If memory serves me well, she talks about almost dying here. 

I walked north through this area on a section hike when there was a 
little snow, and could see that those heading southbound unschooled in 
the ways of ice axes might want to drop down to Levitt Lake or even 
Kennedy Meadows.
