I was actually referring more to the mental impact of having it be more
difficult than expected right off the start, which is much more likely if
you're "out of shape." ;-)

circumstances if you haven't put in the time and miles in preparation
beforehand?
Personally, I think the trail will throw surprises at you no matter how much
time you've taken to prepare. ;-)
