[pct-l] PCT Guidebooks future talk

I wanted to clarify the current plans for updating the three Wilderness
Press PCT guidebooks. I know there's been hopeful speculation here about a
new edition of Oregon/Washington coming out in 2007 but that's not correct.
Ben Schifrin's working away on on a completely new and revamped 8th edition
of Oregon/Washington that will be released in early 2008. However, before
there's too much gnashing of teeth, I should add that we'll be posting a
free PDF update to the book on the Wilderness Press website just as soon as,
well, we get it from Ben. I'll notify the list when that happens.

Ben will also be working on updates to the Northern California and Southern
California volumes but those will likely be released in 2009. Unlike the
current editions of the guides, these new editions will be completely
digitized--including maps!--which means that we can finally distribute
smaller sectons of the books, probably as PDFs. But that's still in the
future. And I guess I should add that this is all subject to change.

The PCT Data Book will be updated after the new editions come out as it's
essentially distilled from the data gathered in those books. I should
clarify that the Data Book is also a Wilderness Press publication. The PCTA
is supportive of it, but any slings or arrows should be directed to us, not
them.
