Ansel Adams in 1938 published a book of dream photographs of the John Muir
Trail to commemorate the completion as the last golden spike was driven
into the Golden Staircase. The original book, only 500 copies, today drives
a near $2000 price on eBay, and I (tried) would love to have a copy!! But
for those of us that have more time and dreams of adventure, than money,
you can now buy the current reprint of the original book.. This is a rare
vintage Sierra Nevada photographic treasure within reach of us! Here is a
short synopsis from a seller on eBay about the book:
"Sierra Nevada: The John Muir Trail" by Ansel Adams
"2006 $50.00 Bulfinch Company oversize (10" x 12") hardcover photography
book, 128 pages.
Description: A rare jewel has been discovered in the oeuvre of Ansel Adams.
Sierra Nevada: The John Muir Trail, originally published in an edition of
only 500 copies in 1938, is an extraordinary publication in many respects.
Adams, at the age of 36, was commissioned to prepare a book of his
photographs taken along the world-famous John Muir Trail as a tribute to
Pete Starr, a young American mountaineer (and son of a Sierra Club
president) killed in a climbing accident. Composed of 50 photographs of the
Sierra Nevada--many never published again--the book is an exquisite portrait
of the mountain world of the High Sierra in California. When first
published, it set a new standard for fine photographic reproduction in book
form. Little, Brown takes great pride in announcing a new edition of this
magnificent book. "
I just purchased this new book for $25 on eBay, but you can find it at your
local book store for $50. This is a grand addition to your library. And of
course, Reinhold deserves a free sponsored one for his drive, spirit,
challenge, ambition, and as the holder of the JMT backpacking record. I
have a first edtion of Peter Starr's "John Muir Trail" book, and Ansel's JMT
book will compliment it nearly perfectly. Find a place for this dream book
in your library!
Hikon!
