As one who takes Amtrak to the trail most times, I
have learned the following:
1. Recently, Greyhound sued Amtrak for providing bus
service. The claim was that Amtrak was acting as a
bus company, not a train company on certain routes in
competition with Greyhound.
2. As part of the settlement, Amtrak agreed to stop
making reservations for routes that were just on buses
such as Bakersfield to Mojave.
3. The way around this is to have part of the trip on
a train, even if you never take the train. Sometimes
a ticket agent can help add a small portion of the
route or you can search for a nearby train stop.
4. You can also ask for a refund of your train ticket
if you do not use that portion.
5. If you reserve on a train that is always late,
like the Coast Starlight. And if the train is more
than 2 hours late, you can ask to be switched to a bus
and get credit for the train ticket.

Maybe I should start a list of Secrets of Amtrak
Sabina
