I heard that in response to the anticipated large numbers of year 2000
thru-hikers that the NFS and USPS are considering the following restrictions:
1) No more than two people per group (large groups cause undue impact on
resources)
2) No more than 23.462976 pounds per backpack (heavy backpacks cause
accelerated erosion of the trail, slow down the carrier and therefor cause
congestion)
3) You will need to reserve a starting date (so a large slug of people don't
overcrowd the trail)
4) Some people will be required to start in March, some in June.
5) You MUST walk at least 30 miles per day.
6) Some consideration for an alternate route to carry some of the huge volume
is being configured. Preliminary consideration is for a route through San
Diego, Los Angeles and every major city up the coast for ease of re-supply
and reduction of impact on the trail.
7) No short people will be allowed to thru-hike. This is an arbitrary
restriction designed to reduce the number of people on the trail and in no
way is meant to be discriminatory in any way. Besides, short people can't
walk as fast and may be eliminated by #5.
Tongue firmly in cheek,
