Anyone that has gone to topozone.com, have you been able to print out
useable maps? I tried printing a couple and they were just a blurr when they
printed. Thanks for any info.

Has anyone heard from Mike lately? He must be out of the mountains by
now.... I was hoping to hear how his trip went...

Good question, Skeeter. Mike's been much in my thoughts the last couple
of days. You asked the question before I had the chance. Interested to
see if anyone has seen or heard.

Meadow Ed has sent me all the info he has on '99 PCTers. I will get that
up on the Roster as soon as possible and let you all know when it's
there. Not too many 2000ers on there yet. I know they're out there.

Enjoy the day.

Does anyone know of a lighter bear canister than the one that is currently on the market.  I spoke with the PCTA office today and they informed me that the supervisor for Kings Canyon and Sequoia has made bear canisters a requirement while backpacking in these parks.  If there is any other info out there I would like to know.

Lert me think a loud here a moment please:

A Palm Pilot weighs 4 oz with batteries. My Nokia weighs 6 oz w/batteries.
My Palm
can hold up to 200 miles of topos @ 1:50000. 10 oz is a *lot* less than the
same amount of topos.

I think the future is here (sic) and a possible answer to carrying so many
maps... every 10-12 days
we download a new set. So now we need to appreciate the fact that a "bit"
of data
truely has "zero-weight"...anti-gravity anyone?-- hey- beam me up
Scotty...warp 10 North!
PalmPilot x + Cell phone  = approx  $60/month total for 3 months=$180 with 300
minutes calling per month included (but roamer charges *are* extra per
zone, maybe $2-3
per call.)  Not tooooo bad. Reading the Pilot is a lot better than just
having a GPS; but can
GPS download maps from topodata? My old Magellan could not. New  ones maybe..
There goes the alcohol weight savings...

Now-- if the damn cell phone wasn't so loud when I downloaded! <smirk>

This past weekend I went on a hiking trip to Desolation Wilderness.
This was my first real overnight hiking trip so I knew it was going
to be tough.  But to make it even more exciting it was going to be
snow hiking.

We hiked Friday evening from the sno-park right off of Highway 50 to
about half away between Lower and Upper Echo Lake.  Then the next
morning hiked to Lake Aloha and spent the cold evening there.
Getting back down to the sno-park was a breeze since it was mostly
down hill.

When it was all said and done, I was hiking in snowshoes and about 50
lbs in the pack.  I figure if I continue training in these types of
conditions I should be in great shape for non-snow hiking with 30 lbs
in the pack.

        http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?lat=38.8552&lon=-120.0862&size=m&s=50

I am sure you all didn't want to hear about this trip so the real
point of this posting was to acknowledge all those that have hiked
before.  As many day hikes that I have done, nothing compares to a
real overnighter when you are carrying a full load in your pack.  And
throw in those snowshoes and it makes it that more difficult.

One neads to be aware that the USFS maps have often misplaced the trail.
Fortuantely the route location shown in the guide books is usually accurate.
